Win the Fashion Race at Melbourne Cup 2016

Spring is well and truly in full-swing, and as floral frocks and fascinators slowly creep their way out of women’s wardrobes across the country, the Melbourne Cup (A.K.A The race that stops the nation) is almost upon us. The famous race is the perfect chance to dust off the heels, get glamourous and enjoy a day of champagne, fine food and betting fun.
Unfortunately, as developments in more recent years’ Race Day fashion trends have shown, for many it’s also the perfect chance to whip out the fake tan, cleavage-popping cocktail dresses and uncomfortable heels that were bought on sale but never really given the opportunity to be worn in (“They were $30, how could I say no?”).
So whether you’re a Spring Racing fashion extraordinaire, or you’re a little overwhelmed trying to figure out the perfect balance between dress length, shoe colour and clutch size, don’t miss our quick tips for making the most of the Melbourne Cup day fashion (and making sure you don’t become the butt of a joke that follows you once the hangover wears off!).
DO: Keep it classy.
Race days are rich in history and steeped in tradition, so it’s best to keep it that way. Find an outfit that shows you off without showing off all the bits that are best kept under wraps.
DON’T: Be a slave to current trends.
It’s easy to be enticed by the Instagram feeds of local celebrities, socialites and fashionistas in the lead-up to the big race, all of which act as a bible to the latest and greatest trends of the fashion world (we’re looking at you, Jennifer Hawkins). Radiate confidence in an outfit that suits your body shape and complexion regardless of what’s on trend.
DO: Choose your footwear wisely.
Don’t join the group of Race Day ladies leaving barefoot dodging the mud patches whilst juggling their clutch and stilettos. Choose a pair of shoes that not only work with your outfit but will go the distance.
DON’T: Buy something you’ll never wear again.
It’s easy to fall in love with every dress on the rack no matter the price tag, but try to consider the value of your purchase whilst doing your shopping. Ideally you’re looking for an outfit that is versatile and perfect for any upcoming Spring events or occasions, or can even be added to your workwear collection if you work in an office!
DO: Join the party and have fun!
The Melbourne Cup is the one time of the year where you can really style up, get social and push fashion boundaries, so don’t forget to have fun while you’re at it!
