History of the Inn
The Camden Valley Inn was built in the early 1930's, originally as a Milk Bar, but always a popular meeting place for locals. The "Camden Vale Inn", as it was then known, was built to promote the pure and wholesome milk of Camden Park. Their delicious morning and afternoon teas and milk drinks made from the "Gold Top" Camden Vale milk, were fine attractions of the region, as was their impressive Rotorlactor, an automatic milking system, pioneering in its time.
Today The Camden Valley Inn still retains its quaint charm and country friendliness in an atmosphere reminiscent of old England. From the outside not much has changed over the years, although the Inn's life has gone from Milk Bar to Restaurant and now to a luxury hotel Inn, after being granted its tavern licence in 1989.
History of Camden
The land on which the Inn stands is also steeped in colourful history, being part of the original grant to Captain John and Elizabeth Macarthur in 1805. It was to his Camden Park Estate that Macarthur brought the first Merino sheep and pioneered the great Australian Wool Industry of today. Captain Macarthur was also the first man to make a serious attempt to establish a commercial vineyard in the region, however because of a clash with Governor Bligh, he was banned from the district and forced to move to Europe. In 1817, after studying wine making overseas, Macarthur returned to Australia and went on to produce wine in commercial quantities at Camden Park.
Camden today
As well as the historic wheat, wine and wool traditions which have arisen from the area, today there are many more experiences on offer. You can go sky diving at the Wilton Sky Diving Centre, horse riding at Oran Park Race Track, play golf at any one of the six courses in the area, visit the Thirlmere Railway Museum or Dingo Sanctuary, or stroll around the Mt Annan Botanical Gardens. Camden also has 33 Heritage-listed buildings, including early farm houses, homesteads and magnificent 19th century stately homes, demonstrating the extent of the region’s history.
